Character
Well with little known about Saleem Sinai, besides the fact that he’s 31, deteriorating, and has an amazing sense of smell, I have decided to comment on his grandfather, Aadam Aziz. He’s a very stubborn character; not only does he never listen to his nose he almost kills himself because he’s too stubborn to eat. Although I think I found out why he didn’t trust his nose about Naseem goes back to when he hit his nose on the ground while praying. This caused him to give up religion, creating a hole, a hole only Naseem could fill. This incident also explains his belief that schooling should not be religion based. I’m confident that the praying incident is responsible for the nose itches, his stubbornness in ignoring them, and possibly even Saleem’s powers. If you think about it if the incident had never happened Aziz would probably not have married Naseem and Saleem would be nonexistent. Or perhaps there is some other reason for this. I hope to find out more in the coming chapters about my theories. Well good-bye for now.

I agree that Aziz seems to stop trusting his nose after he stopped believing in religion. I think it is an interesting point that if Aziz did trust his nose then Saleem would not exist, and so Aziz not trusting his nose could be the cause of Saleem's powers.
ReplyDeleteI never really thought about the connection between Aadam and his nose and the existence of Saleem. I find it a bit funny that Aadam, with such a withered religious faith, is married to Neesa, a woman whose faith is one of the things she chooses to hold onto with a firm grip. I also find it interesting that he stops trusting his nose after his religious side deteriorates. To me, that doesn't seem like it would go hand in hand.
ReplyDeleteThat's something I really didn't think of before. It's sort of contradictory that Aadam not trusting his nose made him unhappy, yet something good (Saleem) eventually comes out of his not listening to Tai. I also don't really think it's because of Aziz not trusting his nose that Saleem has powers because on the back of the book isn't it sort of implied that Saleem's powers originated from the time and date of his birth? However I think that maybe the reason that Saleem got his particular power could have something to do with his grandfather's not trusting of his nose. However I think Aziz's must somehow connect up with the cause of Saleem's powers, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with your nose notion, I said the same thing. Although, how do you figure that his nose itches are the origins of Saleem's powers? I find your connection between Naseem and Aziz's marriage and the birth of Saleem interesting. I never thought of that and it is very true. It is also true that Naseem filled that religious hole.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's sort of a combination of the family nose and the time of his birth that gave him the special powers. I mean, everyone born at midnight got a power, but it was defined by their personal background, which is how Saleem got his amazing sense of smell.
ReplyDeleteI think the whole nose business is kind of weird, but the more posts I read, the more I begin to see the rational behind it. And Marcella, thank you, I was getting to be very confused on that front. But was the reason that the nose got involved in the first place, the praying incident? Because I didn't see how that was relevant.
